Maine Fishing Depth Maps Lakes & Ponds by County
Published in Paperback by DeLorme Publishing (November, 2002)
Author: Delorme
Average review score:

A Must have for serious anglers
DeLorme has come out with a great new publication that is a must have for serious anglers. The 215 page, loose-ring book contains more than 1,700 fishing depth maps of Maine lakes and ponds by counties. There is also stocking information, fish species of each body of water, and location coordinates. This book is long overdue, and is remarkably priced. In fact, if you bought all of these maps from the Fish and Wildlife folks, one map at a time, the price would be prohibitive

Authors: Christopher Barnes and Sarah Stiles Bright
Average review score:

And What Great Lakes They Are
For anyone who enjoys the sparkle of sun on water, the haunting cry of a loon, or the reflection of fall colors and blue sky, this book is an outstanding reminder of the importance of healthy lakes to healthy human communities. Barnes and Bright invite us into their perspective of Maine's fresh water lakes with an intimacy that reveals the personal connections they both feel for these places. This book is filled with striking photographs and powerful imagery of the beautiful lure of Maine's lakes. An excellent book.

Mammoth Lakes Sierra: A Handbook for Roadside and Trail
Published in Paperback by Spellbinder Books (August, 1993)
Authors: Dean Rinehart, Elden Vestal, Bettie E. Willard, and C. Dean Rinehart
Average review score:

The best guide for the Eastern Sierra
This book has been out of print for almost a year because the author is working on a new edition. It is one of the best guides on trails, geology and plants in the Eastern Sierra. I have had countless people ask for it at the Visitor Center where I work. We are expecting the new edition sometime in August. It is the best and only reference for hiking trails in the Eastern Sierra. For Genny Smith's reference to the Owen's Valley area (Bishop Area), please refer to the book: "The Deepest Valley."

The Marblehead Lighthouse: Lake Erie's Eternal Flame
Published in Paperback by Hawk's Cry Publications (October, 1996)
Authors: Betty Neidecker and Rose Kernan
Average review score:

Interesting book for lighthouse lovers!
If you are interested in lighthouses and the Great Lakes in general, then this book will greatly interest you. Read the story about the beautiful Marblehead lighthouse and it's history. I've seen this beauty twice, but sadly have not been able to make it to the area when they give tours. Another hard to find regional history book.

Marine Invertebrates of the Pacific Northwest
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (September, 1996)
Authors: Linda H. Price and Eugene N. Keys to the Marine Invertebrates of Puget Sound, T Kozloff
Average review score:

Excellent set of taxonomic keys to Pac NW invertebrates
Kozloff and Price's set of keys is an excellent tool for collectors and scientists who need to know what they are looking at, and to be sure that they have the right name with the animal in their hand/bucket.

This 8.5" x 11' format book covers marine invertebrate phyla down to the species level for animals found from southern Oregon to the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada. As such, it makes a great companion set of keys to "Light's Manual: Intertidal Invertebrates of the Central California Coast" by Smith and Carlton, and "Marine Algae of California" by Abbott and Hollenberg. That set of 3 books is a treasure for people who need good taxonomic information on nearshore marine life to support what they do along the pacific coast of North America.

Back to Kozloff's book...the book has the keys themselves, as well as supporting BW photographs and great line drawings to help the reader interpret particularly sticky parts of the keys. There are also brief occasional notes about known ranges of some animals covered, but this is not a reference book to the ecology of these animals, it is an excellent set of taxonomic keys.

The book is a reprint of a 1987 publication. As such some names of taxonomic groups have changed in the intervening 13 years. Nevertheless, this book remains the best set of keys for this region that we have.

Marsh Morning
Published in Hardcover by Millbrook Press (16 January, 2003)
Author: Marianne Berkes
Average review score:

Another excellent book by Marianne Berkes
To complement "Marsh Music", "Marsh Morning" talks in a poetic form about bird songs in the marsh. This picture book combines music, poetry and "bird watching." The illustrations go fabulously with the text. The glossary explains each of the 15 birds, its physical description and its voice. The bibliography of bird books adds to its worth. A wonderful addition in many ways.

Mayan Folktales: Folklore from Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
Published in Paperback by Anchor (21 May, 1992)
Author: James D. Sexton
Average review score:

Customer Review
Reviewer, Dr. Janet M. Carey from Littleton, CO
Within this book Sexton has translated and edited thirty-five Mayan folktales told to him by his friend Ignacio Bizarro Ujpan who is a Tzutuhil Mayan Indian living in a town along the shores of Lake Atitlan in the highlands of Guatemala. The tales related are witty, fun and serious and sometimes bring one up with a start. This is a delightful book to read, but along with being entertaining it is a demonstration of the value of folktales within the anthropological realm of the study of a culture.
Analytical work such as Sexton has performed within the pages of Mayan Folktales, as he presents the tales for our enjoyment, also provides a window through which his audience can look to grasp a concept of Mayan thought and culture, modern and ancient. It has been a recognized fact since the 19th century that information exists within the midst of a vast floating body of folk traditions and practices which can add to the speculation of cultural origins, personality, values and attitudes.
Sexton's Introduction is a story in itself and gives the reader the background needed to thoroughly understand and enjoy the tales, his Notes give additional needed explanations. This book is not only a delight to read, but is also demonstrates the rich source of cultural insight concerning obligations, beliefs, values and thought systems to be found in folklore about how a people rationalize political, religious, social and economic behavior.

Memories of Haldimand Township : When the Lakes Roared
Published in Unknown Binding by Boston Mills Press (December, 1997)
Author: Haldimand's History Committee
Average review score:

Wonderful Personal Histories of a Loyalist Ontario Township
This is a marvelous collective work that offers a wide-ranging historical examination of Haldimand Township, located mid-way between Toronto and Kingston on the shores of Lake Ontario. The book offers personal histories and reminiscences and interesting photographs culled from, one can only assume, the photo albums of its residents and their descendants.

While committee books are very often of poor "photocopier quality" and offer little of historical significance to anyone but the relevant town, burg or county's local history buffs, When the Lakes Roared is distinctive not only for its beautiful appearance, fine legible type-face, editorial detail, true image reproduction and solid binding, but also for its detailed attention to the lives and circumstances of the citizens who shaped one part of a larger nation.

This is definitely a book for both your coffee table AND your bedside. Fascinating stuff.
